Based on SBI materials, military man who detonated grenade on playground in Rivne will stand trial
The SBI officers have completed a pre-trial investigation into a military officer of a Kyiv region unit who threw a grenade at people in a playground. As a result of the incident, 3 people were injured, including a 5-year-old girl and a police officer. At the time of the crime, he was on sick leave in his hometown of Rivne.
The indictment was sent to court.
On 4 November 2022, at around 9 p.m., the soldier, in the yard of a house on Roman Shukhevych Street in Rivne, began to show off a live grenade to people. At least twice he pulled the pin, threatening to detonate it.
The investigation revealed that the man was in a state of alcohol intoxication. People who were resting nearby at a playground called the police. After the law enforcement officers arrived, the soldier intentionally threw a grenade towards the crowd.
The munition exploded, injuring three people. Among the victims were a 5-year-old child, a 28-year-old man and a 28-year-old inspector of the Rivne regional patrol police. They all suffered shrapnel injuries.
Law enforcement officers detained the soldier and notified of suspicion. The court sentenced him to custody.
He is currently accused of purchasing and carrying ammunition without a permit, hooliganism with the use of a weapon or other object specially adapted or prepared in advance to inflict bodily harm and intentionally inflicting light bodily harm on a law enforcement officer in connection with the performance of his or her duties (Article 263 (1), Article 296 (4), Article 345 (2) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
The man may face up to 7 years in prison.
