Odesa region: SBI detains law enforcer red-handed while trying to get rid of bribe

The SBI, together with the internal security officers of the National Police and the SBU, exposed a law enforcement officer who set up a scheme to make money from the persons involved in the proceedings. The Bureau conducts systematic work to counter such crimes.

According to the investigation, the law enforcement officer facilitated agreements between investigators and suspects to sentence them to a fine instead of imprisonment. In particular, a resident of Odesa region, who was suspected of illegal drug cultivation and distribution and was to receive a real sentence, was extorted USD 2 thousand for such a "deal".

On 12 April 2023, the official was detained while receiving an illegal benefit. He tried to get rid of the money by throwing it out the car window while fleeing from law enforcement.

The issue of serving the detainee a notice of suspicion of receiving an unlawful benefit (Part 3 Art. 369-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) and choosing a measure of restraint is currently being decided.

The sanction of the article provides for up to 8 years of imprisonment.

Other possible facts of bribery by the lieutenant colonel are being checked and other law enforcement officers involved in the illegal scheme are being identified.
